Freedom fighter Diana Nammi heads to Dundee

Diana Nammi, whose career has taken her from fighting on the front lines as a teenage Peshmerga freedom fighter to being named the UK’s Woman of the Year in 2014, will share her life story next week at the University of Dundee.
As she delivers the second Saturday Series lecture of 2019, Diana will discuss the personal circumstances and motivations for campaigning against violence, including honour-based killings, forced and child marriages and female genital mutilation.
Having spent 12 years as a Peshmerga freedom fighter before fleeing from persecution to the UK in 1996 as a political refugee, Diana has spent her life dedicated to campaigning for universal human rights.
In 2002, she founded the Iranian and Kurdish Women's Rights Organisation (IKWRO) which provides advice, counselling, refuge and training to those who may have experienced violence.
During next Saturday’s talk Diana will also discuss why she continually advocates for schools, police and other services to the public to be educated on how to help victims of violence and trauma.
She said, “I am looking forward to sharing my life story and the values that have driven me forward ever since I was expelled from school many years ago.
“Building a future of social justice for all begins by sharing and discussing the human rights that we all deserve.”
‘Diana Nammi: ‘Building a Sustainable Future Free from Violence’’ is the second talk of this year’s 2019 Saturday Series, the oldest continuous free series of public talks in Scotland.
The event takes place from 6 - 7pm on Saturday 9 March in the University’s Dalhousie Building, Lecture Theatre 3.
Free tickets can be booked online via the university website at www.dundee.ac.uk/saturdayseries.
The audience is advised that overflow theatres may be in use with the main theatre filled on a first come, first seated basis.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception.
