Dundee to host 12-hour symposium

Human rights activists, Marxist scholars, award-winning artists and an international women’s choir are all set to take part in a 12-hour performative think-tank at the University of Dundee this weekend.

Former Icelandic Pirate Party member, Brigitta Jónsdóttir, Human rights activist, Pinar Asku, and Labour candidate for South Thanet, Dr Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt are expected to speak at the half-day international symposium, taking place at the University’s Cooper Gallery on Saturday 30^th November.

The 12 Hour Non-State Parade, chaired by Marxist feminism scholar Angela Dimitrakaki, will also feature two newly commissioned live performances by Scotland-based artists Gordon Douglas and Shona Macnaughton.

Sophia Hao, Cooper Gallery Principal Curator, said the new symposium will offer audiences the opportunity to experience the work of a range of artists, thinkers, filmmakers, dancers and activists setting forth alternative positions to the contemporary state.

"Resounding with passionate calls for action, the 12-Hour Non-State Parade will proclaim alternatives and set in motion a creative and critical mass of national and international practitioners from the arts, theory and social activism.

“We are thrilled to welcome the urgent words and actions of a crowd of contributions from storytellers, dancers, playwrights, writers, poets, filmmakers, a feminist blogger and an international women’s community choir.”

The 12 Hour Non-State Parade takes place between 11am – 11pm on Saturday 30^th November. Tickets are free to book online. Refreshments and vegan/vegetarian lunch and evening meals will be available for those attending.
