The University of Dundee has been named Scotland’s top university at The Herald Higher Education Awards.
Dundee took the top prize, Higher Educational Institution of the Year, at the ceremony in Glasgow last night and also walked away with a further four awards recognising impact of staff and students.
The Outstanding Contribution from a Student category was won by Rawad Qaq, a remarkable and courageous individual who made the journey from war in his homeland of Syria to study at the University on a Humanitarian Scholarship. Professor Kurt Mills’ work on the Scottish Human Rights Defender Fellowship was recognised with the Outstanding Contribution from a Staff Member award.
Along with Abertay University, the University received the Outstanding Contribution to the Local Community accolade in recognition of their roles as founding partners of V&A Dundee. The University also won the Outstanding Marketing Campaign of the Year for the #DiscoverDundee campaign which has contributed to a sector-leading rise in international student recruitment.
Dundee was shortlisted for the LIVE Smart & LEARN Smart project run by Student Services, which contributed to the overall win for the main prize of the night.
Professor Andrew Atherton, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University, said, “This is an outstanding performance and one which is testament to the great work being undertaken across the University, with awards that reflect the great work of our staff and students and show the impact we have locally and internationally.”
“These awards celebrate the strength of Scotland’s higher and further education sector and our performance, including taking home the main prize of the night, highlights our quality as an institution.”
