Broadcaster Jim Spence declared Rector of the University of Dundee

Jim Spence, best known as a Scottish sports broadcaster, will return to his alma mater the University of Dundee as its new Rector.

Jim, who graduated in Law from the University in 1986, will assume the role of Rector from August 1, the start of the next academic year. He was elected unopposed and succeeds round-the-world cyclist and adventurer Mark Beaumont.

Jim will be formally installed as Rector in a ceremony to be arranged for a later date. The Rector is elected to serve the students' interests, including at the University Court, the governing body of the institution.

“I am more than a little surprised but feel deeply honoured to take on the role of Rector at the University of Dundee,” said Jim.

“I have a strong connection to the University, having studied there, and as everyone who knows me would realise I am a passionate advocate for this great city of Dundee. I will do everything I can to help the students and the wider University community, of which I am proud to be a part.”

Jim was nominated for the role by Sean O’Connor, past President of Dundee University Students’ Association and a current student.

Sean said, “I was delighted when Jim agreed to run for Rector and it is great news that he will now take on the role. Jim is well known for his work in sports broadcasting but as someone who also has a long background in education as a college lecturer he understands the issues that students and the education sector face.

“I am sure he will be a strong advocate for students and the University. He also provides yet another link between students, the University and our city.”
