Ace weekend on the cards for volleyball alumni

The University of Dundee’s campus will experience a spike in visitors this weekend when a special anniversary celebration is served up for former members of its volleyball club now scattered across three continents.
More than 60 alumni will return to their alma mater to celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary. A series of challenge matches featuring alumni and current members of the club will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 23 February before a meal, reception and ceilidh are held at Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) that evening.
The volleyball club was one of the founding 23 sports comprising Dundee’s Sports Union and has been one of the University’s most successful sides over the past five decades. Both the men’s and women’s teams have competed at the elite level of UK university sport while dozens of Dundee players have been selected to represent their country.
Reunion organiser Rikke Sorensen, a current member of the club, said, “We will be delighted to welcome back so many former members and to show them how the club, University and city have changed since their day. It will also be a great experience for current members to hear about stories from the past 50 years.
“Volleyball has always been an active and international club here at Dundee, with more than 70 nationalities represented in its membership over its history and this is reflected in the fact that people are coming from the likes of China, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain and Sweden this weekend. This tradition continues to this day, with around 40 countries represented in our record membership of 121.”
Prominent volleyball alumni include Tim Eicke QC, the UK’s judge in the European Court of Human Rights who served as club secretary in 1989, and former women’s captain Karine Polwart, who went on to become one of Scotland’s foremost folk singer songwriters.
