University opens its doors for Discovery Days

University of Dundee academics will begin the New Year by welcoming the public to hear more about their world-leading research.

More than 20 professors, award-winning teachers and students will be among those talking about their specialist work over three days of presentations at Discovery Days 2019.

The annual event, taking place in the University’s Dalhousie Building from Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 January, will see some of the foremost minds in their fields speak about issues such as climate change, the safety of e-cigarettes, treatments for tropical diseases, and Russian politics.

As well as showcasing the talents of Dundee’s academics, Discovery Days 2019 will also provide visitors with a unique opportunity to witness the University Court at work.

The institution’s governing body will host a public session on Wednesday 9 January, allowing members of the public to hear from and pose questions to its leading figures, including Professor Andrew Atherton, the University’s new Principal, who will take up his position on January 1st.

Jon Urch, Senior Public Engagement Officer at the University, said, “This event always provides a fascinating insight into the minds that help the University of Dundee to transform lives throughout the world.

“More than 200 Professors have shared their work with audiences since this event started in 2004, and this year’s speakers will undoubtedly continue that tradition of informing and inspiring fellow staff members, students and the public when they talk about their own work.

“This year we are also giving visitors the chance to witness the University Court in action, an extremely rare opportunity that will give an insight as to how important decisions are made, and how its members interact.”

Each presentation lasts for around 15 minutes, with refreshments served between sessions. Events are free to attend and everyone is welcome, with visitors having the opportunity to quiz speakers about their work.

Among the presenters this year are:
