Student captures surreal shot of Dundee

University of Dundee Fine Art student Jakub Stepanovic fought through mud and darkness to get a unique photograph from the River Tay.

The shot, which depicts the Tay Bridge in Dundee silhouetted at night, was taken from the riverbed at low tide.

Jakub says he has climbed onto the Tay riverbed before, but this was his first time there at night.

“Sometimes I find myself going for walks with my camera to unwind after a long day of studying or work,” said Jakub.

“Looking for interesting angles help me destress and so when I found the Tay at low tide, I had this composition in mind instantly.”

Jakub, a final-year student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, previously worked full-time as a photojournalist.

He said that spending years taking photographs for magazines and newspapers in various outdoor settings, sometimes in dangerous conditions, was crucial in determining how to stay safe.

He added, “The Tay can be treacherous at times, so it’s important to exercise caution and having appropriate shoes before entering the river.”

Jakub intends to finish his degree and plans to continue studies for a Masters degree in Fine Art.
