‘Reanimating Rabbie’ – rare film screenings for Burns Night

A free event at the University of Dundee this week will celebrate Burns Night with screenings of rare films from Scotland’s National Moving Image Archive. 

The programme includes two rare animated films from the 50s and 70s, Tam o’ Shanter and Tam o’ Shanter Rides Again, as well as a rare 1933 silent documentary, Homes and Haunts of Scotland's Ploughman Poet Robert Burns. Silent screen pianist and composer, Steven Gellatly will provide live musical accompaniment.

Honorary Research Fellow Dr David Robb will give a short talk on Burns’ ‘Tam o’Shanter’ and Creative Writing tutor Eddie Small will read McGonagall’s verses of praise to Scotland’s national bard.

The event is part a series hosted by the School of Humanities Centre for Critical and Creative Cultures and Centre for Scottish Culture.

Dr Keith Williams, Reader in English, said, “We’re delighted to be hosting this exciting and fun event celebrating our great bard. It seems very fitting that his words have taken on new life in moving images and music, given Burns’ wonderful visual imagination and passion for song.”

‘Reanimating Rabbie – Ane Alternative Burns Nicht’ will take place from 6.15pm on Thursday 25 January 2018, University of Dundee, Tower Building, in Baxter Lecture Theatre following a wine reception from 5.15pm.

The event is free and open to all, an early arrival is recommended.
