One Profession, Many Stories - mental health nursing

A new campaign which aims to raise awareness of mental health nursing is being launched to coincide with World Mental Health Day 2018.
‘Mental Health Nursing – One Profession, Many Stories’ is a joint campaign by NHS Tayside and the University of Dundee which aims to raise awareness of the work and experiences of mental health nurses in Tayside.
Launching on World Mental Health Day 2018 (Wednesday, 10 October), the campaign will see a series of videos shared on NHS Tayside and the University of Dundee’s social media sites with the hashtag #OneProfessionManyStories. The videos will feature mental health nursing students, newly-qualified nurses at the start of their careers, professionals with well-established careers and service users, as well as the history of mental health services and visions for the future.
The campaign aims to attract new students into the profession and recruit and retain staff in Tayside by showcasing the positive, life-changing impact mental health nurses make to people every day, and highlighting the many career opportunities within mental health nursing.
The videos will direct people on how to find out more about mental health nursing, including how to get started on the career path at the University of Dundee or choosing NHS Tayside as a place to come to work in mental health services.
NHS Tayside’s Associate Nurse Director for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Keith Russell said, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with our colleagues at the University of Dundee to tell the story of mental health nursing.
“Mental health nurses work alongside people with mental health problems in their homes, communities and hospitals. Our video campaign aims to tell the stories and experiences of our mental health nurses and the impact they have on people’s lives every day.”
Jacqui Eccles, Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at the University’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences, said, “Mental health nursing is an excellent career choice, whether you come to it straight from school or change direction later in life. In addition to being varied and flexible, it offers you a chance to really make a difference in people’s lives.
“It is vital that we recruit the best and brightest people to this profession as those who use mental health services deserve nothing less. We hope that by showcasing the many and varied facets of mental health nursing in these short films, we will encourage people to consider this multi-faceted and rewarding career path.”
