New Contemporaries accolade for artists and architect

Fourteen graduates who vowed visitors to this year’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and Architecture Degree Show have been chosen to exhibit at Scotland’s most prestigious platform for young creative talent.

The University of Dundee contingent will compete for prizes with a total value of more than £40,000 at the 10th annual New Contemporaries exhibition, which takes place at the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries in February.

Thirteen artists and one architect from the University will be exhibiting, along with dozens of graduates of Scotland’s other art colleges who impressed judges with their work at their Degree Shows this year.

The artists who studied at the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design are Nicole Cumming, Elizabeth Day, Michael Doherty, Melina Doumy, Megan Goldie, Rachel McCreadie, Zen O’Conor, Catie O’Hara, Lara Orman, Senyn, Nina Stanger, Jamie Steedman, and Daniel Twist. Exhibiting architect Louisa Schmolke is a graduate of the University’s School of Social Sciences.

Professor Paul Harris, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone, said, “We eagerly await RSA New Contemporaries 2019 when our graduates take their place among the best young artists in the country. Dundee is strongly represented at this prestigious exhibition each year and we wish all those chosen for next year’s exhibition the very best of fortune and opportunities in their future careers.”

Helen O’Connor, Head of Architecture and Urban Planning, added, “Congratulations to Louisa on this recognition. She has taken a highly innovative approach in her work reimagining the city and I’m sure she will not only stand out amongst the other graduate architects but will go on to enjoy a successful career after the exhibition.”

New Contemporaries reflects the RSA’s commitment to supporting and presenting the best contemporary work in Scotland. The RSA team works closely with the artists and architects towards developing a lasting relationship in the lead up to the exhibition and beyond.

These recent graduates will have the opportunity to launch their careers at the RSA galleries by exhibiting a substantial body of work, including painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation. Works will be for sale and the exhibition offers patrons the opportunity to invest in Scotland’s up and coming talent.
