Dr Sarah Coulthurst recognised by Royal Society of Edinburgh

The University of Dundee’s Dr Sarah Coulthurst is among the leading academics and professionals to be recognised in the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s 2018 Prize List.

Dr Coulthurst, Deputy Head of the Division of Molecular Microbiology at the School of Life Sciences, was awarded the RSE Patrick Neill Medal for her research in the field of microbiology, particularly in the area of bacterial communication and competition.

“I am delighted and honoured to receive this award” she said. “It is a testament to the hard work and talent of the people in my lab and my other great colleagues.

“This award is particularly special because it was funding from the Royal Society of Edinburgh which first allowed me to establish my lab, when they awarded me a Fellowship in 2009. Since then, we have been working on the clever ways in which bacteria fight with each other and we hope that this will lead to better ways to tackle infectious disease in the future.”

Each year the RSE presents a series of Prizes and Medals to individuals who have made an outstanding commitment and contribution to their field of expertise.

The variety of interdisciplinary talent and expertise evident in this year’s recipients is a real testament to the level of knowledge and excellence that we have here in Scotland. The contribution made by these individuals truly encompass the meaning of the RSE’s own mission, 'Knowledge Made Useful'.”
