CBE for Professor Bob Steele

Professor Bob Steele, of the University of Dundee, has been awarded a CBE in HM The Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his work on the prevention, early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer.

Professor Steele holds a Chair in Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Dundee. He is one of the UK’s leading authorities on cancer screening, which plays a vital role in detecting the disease in its earliest stages and increasing survival rates.

His main interest is colorectal cancer and he is Director of the Scottish Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme, having acted as clinical lead for the UK demonstration pilot that was used to inform the decision to introduce national screening programmes throughout the United Kingdom.

In 2016 he was appointed as Chair of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC), the body which advises Ministers and the NHS in all four countries about all aspects of screening policy.

Last month he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
