‘A decade of cancer prevention’ - Café Science on 22 January
Published On Tue 16 Jan 2018 by Dominic Younger
A leading University of Dundee researcher will outline the daily steps people can take to help prevent certain cancers at Café Science next week.
The event, which takes place at Avery & Co on Monday 22 January, will see Professor Annie Anderson, from the School of Medicine, recap on a decade in cancer prevention research developed at the University.
“There is very strong evidence to suggest four in 10 cancers are linked to lifestyle,” said Professor Anderson. “We know that diet, weight and activity levels can change people’s risk of developing certain cancers. However, only 3% of the national funding in cancer research is spent on prevention.”
Professor Anderson is one of the country’s leading experts in cancer prevention and public health nutrition. She is currently the Director of The Centre for Public Health Nutrition Research and Co-director of The Centre for Research into Cancer Prevention and Screening at the University.
Café Science, launched in January 2008, will celebrate its 10th anniversary this month. Over the past decade, it has attracted over 7000 visitors to its informal discussions led by leading local researchers, allowing the public to learn about the ground-breaking science at the Universities of Dundee and Abertay.
‘A Decade in Cancer Prevention’ takes place at Avery & Co, 34 South Tay Street, at 7pm on Monday 22 January. The event is free and open to all. There is no need to book in advance but an early arrival is recommended.
