£8000 scholarships open to pupils with a degree in their sights

School pupils in Dundee looking to move on to higher education are invited to apply for scholarships worth £8000 over the duration of a four-year degree at the University of Dundee.

The Joan Markie and Richard Smith Scholarship is open to sixth-year pupils who attend a local authority secondary school in Dundee and who are planning to study at the University. 

The scholarships are funded by Richard Smith, a former pupil of Harris Academy who moved to Australia in the 1960s and wanted to give something back to his home city by helping disadvantaged Dundee school pupils with the cost of studying at university. 

The scholarships are split into two categories. The first is open to young people who attend Harris Academy. The other is available to pupils who attend any of the city's local authority secondary schools. The applicants must have received an offer to study from the University. 

Each recipient will receive £2000 per year for all four years of their undergraduate study. 

First-year Law student Holly Ramsay is currently benefiting from the scholarship.  

She said, “I was really surprised when I was successful in getting the scholarship but it has opened up more opportunities for me, helping me further my career in a way I thought would not be possible.  

"Now my sights are already set on achieving my degree and doing a Masters.”
