University to show old movies to mark an end of 50th Anniversary celebrations

Footage of the Queen Mother being installed as the University of Dundee’s first chancellor and Stephen Fry’s hilarious rectorial address will be screened at an event next week.

The University’s Archives team have been busy digging out a fascinating collection of films from times gone by.

The clips will be shown in the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre on Thursday 7 December. ‘The Way We Were: the University on Film’ also includes footage from the 1930s, when the institution was part of the University of St Andrews.

University Archivist Caroline Brown said, “We wanted to be able to show these amazing glimpses of history to the wider public, especially with our 50^th year drawing to a close.

“It’s such a great opportunity to marvel at bygone fashions, spot familiar faces, view the campus as it once was and learn something about the history of the University.”

The list of films to be shown are:

• A 1930s trip to Rasaay

• Student protests

• The changing campus and building the Tower

• The installation of the Queen Mother as Chancellor

• Le Comber explaining Liquid Crystal Display and Sir Philip Cohen on Life Sciences in the early 1990s

• Stephen Fry’s rectorial address

The Way We Were: the University on Film takes place at 1pm in the D’Arcy Thompson Lecture Theatre on Thursday 7 December. This is a free event and there is no need to book.

On August 1st 1967, the University of Dundee came into formal existence by virtue of a Royal Charter and separated from the University of St Andrews.
