‘Signal/Noise: Imaging/Drawing – exhibition at LifeSpace Gallery
Published On Tue 10 Jan 2017 by Cara Longmuir
Artwork inspired by medical data will go on display this week at the University of Dundee’s LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery.
An exhibition of drawings and animations by Manchester-based artist and researcher Daksha Patel will open on Wednesday, 11th January. It includes her recent work based on medical and scientific data and imaging technologies.
Daksha is interested in unpredictability and the unknown in both art and science, and her drawing practice often employs unstable materials, such as clay and latex. She was recently part of a residency in Imaging Science at the University of Manchester and in 2016 she was nominated for the Art Gemini Prize. This will be her first exhibition in Scotland.
Her work will be alongside artefacts and works of art selected by Daksha from the University’s collections.
LifeSpace curator Dr Sarah Cook said, “Drawing is a fundamental part of the scientific research process, from a sketch to quickly communicate the findings of an experiment, to data-driven animations showing molecular interactions.
“Daksha’s drawing practice shows us a way beyond scientific imaging. She’s interested in the interference or ‘noise’ which sometimes arises in medical imaging, such as CT scans, which practitioners often try to disregard. Through her intensely detailed and delicate works, Daksha shows us the noise as we haven’t noticed it before.“
‘Signal/Noise: Imaging/Drawing’ will be on display in LifeSpace from Wednesday, 11th January until Saturday, 1st April. The gallery will be open Saturday 11am-5pm and Monday-Friday by appointment only, email lifespace@dundee.ac.uk to arrange.
The exhibition is also part of the Women in Science Festival which takes place the 4th-10th March.
