Semester of success for architecture student Sophie

A third-year Architecture student from the University of Dundee is up for two national awards this year following a semester of success.

Sophie Curran, originally from Auchterarder, has been nominated for the Royal Institute of British Architect (RIBA) President’s Medal, which is regarded as the most prestigious international awards in architectural education and celebrates outstanding design work.

Sophie has also been shortlisted for the prestigious Women in Property Awards finals in London next month.

These nominations come after a semester of success at the University where she was awarded the Dundee Plus award in April, the Michael Spen’s Award, for Best Design Theory, and the JT McLaren award, for highest aggregated marks, at her third-year degree show.

She said, “It’s quite unbelievable to be up for these awards. I’ve wanted to be an architect since I was seven years old, we lived in London and I used to walk over the Putney bridge, I remember being in awe of the transformation  to Putney Wharf – I told my dad that I wanted to do that and he said to do that you have to become an architect.

“Architecture isn’t easy, often it is tough but it has been with the help and support of my course leaders and tutors that I’ve been able to excel at something I love.”

Helen O’Connor, Head of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University, said, “Sophie’s success is well deserved and we are delighted to see how she has flourished.

“We are immensely proud and cannot wait to see how she continues with us at Dundee.”
