Science and Art collaborations to go on display

A ground breaking exhibition that combines science and art will go on display at the University of Dundee’s LifeSpace Gallery this week.
‘Future Emerging Art and Technology’ (FEAT) has been created from collaborations between six internationally acclaimed artists and scientists undertaking cutting-edge work on new technologies. The works explore gene regulation, quantum physics, underwater robotics, carbon capture, and exascale computing.
LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery Curator Dr Sarah Cook said, “The works in this exhibition are a challenge to scientists in more than one way. Firstly, they ask us to understand the content of complex research projects involving new technologies from a totally different perspective.
“Secondly they suggest the potential of involving artists in scientific research projects to create engaging, persuasive and experimental reflections on the bigger picture.”
The artists are from across the UK and Europe and include boredomresearch (Vicky Isley & Paul Smith) whose award-winning work based on research into the disease malaria was included in a previous exhibition at LifeSpace.
At the opening there will be a live data event by Slovenian artists Špela Petri? and Miha Turši? who have been working in collaboration with scientists in Edinburgh developing supercomputing systems.
UK-based bio-artist Anna Dumitriu is presenting textile-based work that considers a time before antibiotic resistance, while Pinar Yoldas has created a generative animation resulting from her research into new technologies based on tailor-made diamond materials for the transformation of carbon dioxide. Artists Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand have created an optical projection that suspends tiny particles in the light of a laser beam, suggesting the difficulties of observing the quantum nature of individual atoms.
‘Future Emerging Art and Technology’ will be on display in LifeSpace from Friday 14th April until Saturday 17th June.
