RSA New Contemporaries 2017

Graduate artists and architects from the University of Dundee will compete for prizes with a total value of more than £40,000 when an exhibition of Scotland’s emerging creative talents opens this week.
The ninth annual New Contemporaries exhibition will take place at the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries in Edinburgh from Saturday, 18th February. New Contemporaries is regarded as the most prestigious showcase for young artists in Scotland. Presenting work across a wide range of media, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the best of Scotland’s emerging talent under one roof.
Thirteen artists and three architects from Dundee will be exhibiting, along with a further 50 graduates of Scotland’s art colleges who impressed judges with their work at their Degree Shows last year.
The artists who studied at the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design are: Claire Connor, Lily Hassioti, Kieran Milne, Daphne Percy-Chorafa, Lena Phalén, Anna Wallace Reid, Tamara Richardson, Emily Stewart, Jasmine Summerton, Kristian Thomassen, Blake Venus, Jamie Watt, and Alison Wright. Exhibiting architects Fergus Low, Robbie Miller and Elspeth Taylor are graduates of the University’s School of Social Sciences.
Professor Paul Harris, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have so many of our artists represented in New Contemporaries, which once again encapsulates the very best of Scotland’s emerging, artistic talent.
“The work of our students and graduates is a physical testimony to the high quality teaching and practice delivered by the staff at Duncan of Jordanstone. We wish all those chosen for this year’s exhibition the very best of fortune and opportunities in their future careers.”
Lorens Holm, Reader in Architecture, added, “It is an incredible honour for our three students. We feel it is important that an institution such as the RSA recognises the polemical and avant-garde approach to architecture and city-making taken by Elspeth, Fergus, and Robbie’s joint project, and thereby endorses its critical value.”
New Contemporaries reflects the RSA’s commitment to supporting and presenting the best contemporary work in Scotland. The RSA team works closely with the artists and architects towards developing a lasting relationship in the lead up to the exhibition and beyond.
These recent graduates are given the opportunity to launch their careers at the prestigious RSA galleries by exhibiting a substantial body of work, including painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation. Works will be for sale and the exhibition offers patrons the opportunity to invest in Scotland’s up and coming talent.
The RSA New Contemporaries exhibition awards include the £14,000 Fleming-Wyfold Bursary and the £10,000 Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Award. In addition to the monetary awards, residency, studio and purchase prizes are also up for grabs
New Contemporaries will be open at the RSA, The Mound, Edinburgh, from 18th February to 14th March. Admission costs £5/£3.
