New Designers Sainsbury’s Award for Daisy

A textile design graduate from the University of Dundee has been named the winner of a prestigious New Designers Award.

Daisy Stott, who exhibited her work in last month’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design Degree Show, won the Sainsbury’s Home Award at the New Designers exhibition in London for her tableware collection `Foraged Findings’, inspired by edible plant and foodstuffs found throughout Scotland.

Daisy said, “This is quite a surprise. I'm extremely honoured and it’s amazing to be recognised. I hope it will help take me to great places.”

The judges said of her work,“Daisy has a wonderful talent for bridging print, pattern and typography. There is also a great British story behind the product and her textiles. Her use of colour palette and embroidery was exquisite.”

The Sainsbury’s Home Award brings Daisy a prize of £500 and an invitation to present her portfolio to the Sainsbury’s Design Team with the chance of a one-year paid work placement within the Sainsbury’s Design Studio with a salary of £20,000.

Andrew Tanner, Design Manager, Sainsbury’s Home said, “I started my career back at New Designers in 1997 so this show is incredibly close to my heart. We’re keen to attract the best new design talent into our in-house design team, who are responsible for over 80% of Sainsbury’s Home products. This is why we have partnered with New Designers – it is the platform for the most creative and innovative design graduates from across the nation. Through the Sainsbury’s Home Young Designer of the Year Award, we will be welcoming a rising star into our ranks as junior designer with a one year, salaried work placement.”

The New Designers Awards were presented by Keith Byrmer Jones, renowned British ceramicist and judge on BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down.

The coveted New Designers Awards are given to this year’s most talented design graduates in the fields of textiles, fashion, costume design, jewellery, precious metalwork and contemporary design crafts.

Presented in partnership with leading brands and organisations, The New Designers Awards recognise the design world’s rising stars. The prizes - including cash, professional advice and paid work placements of up to one year - offer graduates vital support as they embark on their professional careers. Winners also received signed New Designers Awards mugs especially created for the occasion by Keith Byrmer Jones.

Sarah Monk, Director of New Designers, said: “There’s such a wealth of brilliant ideas at this year's New Designers that our judges have been spoilt for choice. We’re hugely grateful to our sponsors for their generous support in recognising these talented individuals and providing them with such fantastic opportunities as they take the first steps into their creative careers.”
