MBE for Professor David Coates

Professor David Coates, of the School of Life Sciences at the University, has been awarded an MBE in HM The Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Coates has been given the award `for services to biology’.

Professor Coates has held the position of Director of Life Sciences Learning and Teaching at the University and has also worked extensively with the Royal Society of Biology.

He said, “I am truly honoured to be recognised in this way for my work with the Royal Society of Biology, in supporting the development of a single voice for Biology in the UK, which is now having such a powerful effect on policy.

“Also for the recognition of being part of the development of an accreditation system for biology degrees that is changing the way University students are helped to develop not just their science skills, but their wider understanding of the world after Higher Education, and where they can contribute.”

Professor Julian Blow, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, said, “David has had a tremendous impact on Life Sciences in Dundee, reorganising and revitalising our undergraduate teaching programmes and establishing Dundee as a centre for excellence in Life Sciences teaching. I am delighted that David’s wide-ranging achievements have been recognised by the award of an MBE.”
