Law Lecturer Kirsteen set for University of Berkeley

A Law Lecturer from the University of Dundee has been awarded a prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh and Fulbright Scholarship to spend a semester at the University of Berkeley, California.

Dr Kirsteen Shields will take up her Visiting Scholar post at Berkeley from September. From there she will continue her research into land reform, human rights and the right to food.

She said, “It is an honour to be given an opportunity to spend time at Berkeley, and I am grateful to Dundee for enabling it. Scholar exchanges like this are vital for the spread and transfer of knowledge.

“The University of Berkeley at the cutting edge of research into agriculture in the US and its political climate makes it a great opportunity to continue my research into the human right to food. I feel very lucky that the RSE, Fulbright and Berkeley selected me for this award and I cannot wait to bring back my new experiences and knowledge to Dundee.”

Dr Shields recently helped shape the Land Reform (Scotland) Act in 2015 and was seconded to the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) under their first Academic Fellowship scheme during 2016/17. Since 2010, she has held the post of Lecturer at Dundee and teaches UK Public Law and International Human Rights Law.
