International eHealth prize for `My Diabetes My Way’

A major international prize for eHealth has been awarded to a project developed at the University of Dundee which allows people with diabetes across Scotland to access their medical records online, support their self-management and improve their knowledge of their condition.

My Diabetes My Way, the diabetes online platform created by University of Dundee for NHS Scotland, was given the eHealth Adoption Award at the eHealth Week 2017 conference being held in Malta this week.

 “This is a major honour for the University and Scotland’s health system,” said Dr Deborah Wake, Clinical Senior Lecturer in the University of Dundee School of Medicine and Clinical Lead for My Diabetes My Way.

“The My Diabetes My Way service is genuinely unique worldwide, providing electronic health records access to an entire national population. Every day we hear from users that our website is a useful tool that not only aids self-management, but improves a patient’s knowledge of their condition.”

The platform allows patients to have online access to test results, clinic letters and data driven tailored treatment plans. It also contains multimedia resources aimed at improving self-management, including traditional information leaflets, interactive educational tools, videos describing diabetes-related complications and testimonials from people with diabetes talking about their experiences.

My Diabetes My Way has been internationally recognised as a model for sharing information with patients in a way they can easily access. It has already won numerous awards, including 2015 Diabetes UK Self –Care Award, Best Online Stakeholder Site at the Institute of Internal Communications Awards 2014, and the Best Initiative Supporting Self Care Award at the Quality in Care Diabetes Awards 2014. Last month the 28,000^th patient signed up to the site.

Dr Scott Cunningham, Technical Lead for My Diabetes My Way from NHS Tayside, said, “This is yet more fantastic recognition of the work the ‘My Diabetes My Way’ team has done over the last few years. This is an area where Scotland really is leading the way in diabetes care, and this is a model that can be applied in other disease areas and in other countries.”

The team have now spun out the MyWay digital health company with hopes to take My Diabetes My Way to the rest of the world.
