Global recognition for Dundee’s Mother and Infant Research Unit

The University of Dundee’s global contribution to research on mother and infant health and midwifery is being recognised with a record representation at the leading conference in the field in Canada next week.
Staff from the University’s Mother and Infant Research Unit (MIRU) will make 17 presentations at the 31st International Colleges of Midwives Triennial Congress in Toronto, the largest gathering in the world of experts in midwifery.
Professor Mary Renfrew said, “This is unprecedented representation at the ICM Congress and strongly emphasises the impact Dundee is having in mother and infant health.
“We have made major contributions in the past few years including co-authoring the Lancet series on midwifery, which has become a major guiding text in shaping policy and practice across the world.
“We will be presenting in Toronto alongside, and for, the major institutions such as the World Health Organisation.”
Joining Professor Renfrew will be four other staff of the MIRU, which is part of the University’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences – Dr Alison McFadden, Dr Andrew Symon, Dr Joan Cameron and Dr Heather Whitford. They will be presenting papers on a range of subjects including:
- infant feeding
- leadership
- research models and priorities
- models of midwifery care
- translating evidence in to policy
- and the impact of the Lancet series of midwifery
The 31st ICM Triennial Congress takes place in Toronto from June 18th to 22nd. The Congress will be attended by 130 Midwives Associations, representing 114 countries across every continent.
