Future of European languages to be explored

Dozens of multilinguists, teachers and civil servants from across Europe will come together this weekend at the University of Dundee to discuss the future of languages education.

Representatives from the European Commission and the Consuls General of France, Germany and Spain are expected to arrive this Saturday, 3rd June for a discussion on the future of language acquisition in Scotland.

A full day of discussions workshops and speeches are planned to be held at the University in partnership with the Spanish Embassy Education Office, Instituto Cervantes, Goethe Institut and the Institut Français.

Mayra Crowe, Lecturer in Spanish at the University, said, “The UK is about to go through major policy changes and it is very important to encourage the acquisition of languages in Scotland.

“We in Scotland, regardless of what happens, need to continue to focus on multilingual language policy that is inclusive and continues the positive work and partnerships we have all over Europe.”

Xabier San Isidro, from the Spanish Embassy Education Office, said, “We are delighted to bring so many key stakeholders and nations together to discuss languages in Dundee. It is vital that we share best practice and learn from one another.”

In November last year, representatives from the Spanish Ministry of Education confirmed their support for the only graduate diploma in Spanish supported by the Spanish Government in the UK, taught by the University.
