Engineering students take top prize in China

A team of engineering students from the University of Dundee scooped up first place in a prestigious competition held at Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology (SIBET) in China this week.

More than 100 teams from around the world took part in this year’s biomedical instrumentation innovation competition, which sees teams design new medical devices.

This year saw the competition being opened up to international teams for the first time, with the Dundee team won an award with their design for anti-tremor watch for those living with Parkinson’s.

The team, consisting of Masters students Tanatswa Jamera, Charlotte Keatch and Oluwatomilola Adekoya, was one of only two from the UK to be selected to enter the SIBET competition- a team from Cambridge also won a first place prize for their designs.

Tanatswa said, “We are absolutely delighted to have won SIBET this year. Our designs for a watch that can detect and mitigate the hand tremors felt by those with Parkinson’s is something we’ve been working on for more than eight weeks so it’s great to see it all come together. It’s a fantastic way to end the year.”
