Dundee rated among world’s best places to study energy law

The University of Dundee’s Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) has been rated one of the best places in the world to study energy law.

The LLM Guide, a respected online ranking which compares Master of Laws courses worldwide, placed Dundee in the top 10 of its Energy Law 2017 list. It praised the breadth of courses available at CEPMLP and noted its four decades of expertise in energy law programmes.

Professor Peter Cameron, Director of CEPMLP, said, “We are delighted by this recognition, which once again shows that Dundee is a world-leading centre of energy law scholarship.

“We welcome students to Dundee from countries around the world with both established and emerging energy and natural resources sectors. In doing so, we educate and train the next generation of energy leaders, as shown by the number of our alumni taking up high-profile and critically important roles in their home countries and beyond.

“The commodities downturn of the past few years has been sharp and dramatic but we are preparing our students for the opportunities that will emerge when the upturn happens. When it comes, employers want the very best graduates to lead the oil, gas and mining industries.”

The LLM guide noted that globally governments and other bodies play regulatory roles around energy, resulting in a complex patchwork of laws covering everything from coal extraction to filling a car with petrol.

“Increasingly, energy production intersects with laws governing environmental protection,” it said. “With an LLM in energy law, students can come to terms with the various aspects of the energy field, and recent regulatory shifts, economic changes, and the related forces that are continuously affecting the industry.”

CEPMLP offers LLM courses covering various topics in the field, such as Energy Law and Policy, Mineral Law and Policy, Natural Resources Law and Policy, Oil and Gas Law and Policy, and Petroleum Taxation and Finance.
