Dundee Literary Festival adds all-inclusive storytelling session to festival line-up

The organisers of Dundee Literary Festival have worked with local disability charity PAMIS to ensure this year’s programme is as open and inclusive as possible.

PAMIS, who support people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, have worked with organisers on a multi-sensory storytelling event for families.

The free event, which will be held at Bonar Hall from 10am to 12pm on Friday 20October, will also see PAMIS launch one of their new stories, ‘Oona and the Giant’. The new stories, inspired by the work of the charity’s founder Loretto Lambe, have been devised to connect with those who find it difficult to communicate verbally. PAMIS will also bring their new mobile changing places toilet to the venue to ensure fully accessible facilities are available.

Several other family-focused events will take place at this year’s Literary Festival, with something being held for children every day.

These include a tea party inspired by family favourite The Tiger Who Came to Tea. While the children sit down for a picnic on Friday 20 October they will also be able to make their own tiger mask and tail. Families will also be invited to celebrate Harry Potter, fairytales and robots.

This year’s festival finale will be a family concert from The Bookshop Band on Sunday 22 October. The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books and will perform songs inspired by Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, among other classics.  

Peggy Hughes, Programme Manager of the Dundee Literary Festival, said, “We always want to make sure we’re reaching out to everyone who loves literature during the Festival. This is why we’re delighted to be working with PAMIS.

“The multi-sensory storytelling event is going to be fantastic and I cannot wait to see what they have planned for our visitors.

“We’ve got lots to do for families during the school holidays, so we would love to see everyone down here at the Festival, listening to a story, enjoying themselves and getting inspired.”
