Duncan of Jordanstone students set for Venice

Three students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design will have the chance to develop their practice at the world’s largest and most prestigious visual arts exhibition.

Jo Hanning, Laura Gray and Nicola Donaldson are among 14 students from across Scotland selected for the Scotland + Venice 2017 Professional Development Programme. The scheme gives them the opportunity to learn and develop new skills within the context of the 57th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia.

Scotland + Venice activity will be led by a solo show of new work by the artist Rachel Maclean. The exhibition takes place from May to November. The students will act as ambassadors for Scotland in Venice, highlighting the importance of the country’s involvement in the Biennale.

Amanda Catto, Head of Visual Art at Creative Scotland and Chair of the Scotland + Venice partnership, said, “The programme offers arts students from across Scotland a valuable experience to work with the curatorial team, to build new professional relationships, and to develop a much deeper understanding of the context in which they practice as artists whilst getting to experience the very best international contemporary art from across the world.”

Jo, Laura and Nicola, all 3rd year Fine Art students at Duncan of Jordanstone, part of the University of Dundee, will welcome visitors, assist with events and screenings, inform visitors about the Scottish pavilion, and maintain the project’s online presence.  They will also have the opportunity to learn new skills and to expand their network of artists and art world peers, inspired by the unique surroundings of the Venice Biennale.

The Scotland + Venice Professional Development Programme began fourteen years ago. Since then, the programme has provided the opportunity for over 80 students from eight colleges to spend time in Venice alongside like-minded artists, experiencing the distinctive setting of Venice and expanding their own practice.
