Design students look to the Waterfront for latest project

The changing face of Dundee’s waterfront is providing the inspiration for the next generation of designers at the University of Dundee.

The second year Textile Design students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design have used the redevelopment of the city’s Waterfront to create designs that capture the creativity behind its transformation.

They were asked to investigate the area and to produce drawings and photographs of the developments, including V&A Dundee and the new railway station. They used workshops to develop their techniques and to explore methods of experimentation.

The project helped to increase their depth of understanding of the design process and all it entails.

Lecturer and renowned tie designer in her own right, Jane Keith said “Dundee is currently in the process of a rapid major regeneration, both physically with the new V&A Dundee, and in the perception of how the city is viewed by the public.

“We thought this project would be a great way for students to use their skills and come up with interesting designs. They have produced some great work that I feel captures the vibrancy and excitement of the ever-evolving structure of the Waterfront.”

Councillor Will Dawson, Dundee City Council’s City Development convener, said, “I am delighted to see this creativity that is being inspired by the Waterfront regeneration.

“I hope that the transformation of our city leaves a lasting impression on the students and helps spark more ideas for their projects in the future.”

Philip Long, Director of V&A Dundee, said, “We are thrilled to see the creative responses from these highly talented students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

“V&A Dundee will open to the public in 2018, bringing with it galleries and exhibitions of design that will inspire creativity in many different forms, so it’s particularly exciting to see the next generation of designers already being inspired by our new museum before its construction is even completed.”
