Couple renew their own vows for University’s 50th anniversary

George and Sunita Thomson, who met and then tied the knot at the University of Dundee in 1987, returned to campus at the weekend to renew their marriage vows in front of fellow alumni.

The couple met at the University’s Medical School in the 1980s when Sunita was studying for one of her subsequent three degrees from the University. Together they returned to campus for the 50th Anniversary Alumni weekend and renewed their vows in a ceremony with the minister who married them almost three decades ago, Rev Bob Gillies.

Sunita said, “George and I were considering renewing our vows on our 30th anniversary and it seemed so meaningful to do so in the place where we met, lived and studied and where we were married almost 30 years ago.

“When we learned that Rev Gillies was attending the service on Sunday 21st May and that he was happy to bless us, we decided that that was the perfect time for our renewal. We would like to thank the Chaplain, Rev. Fiona Douglas for organising this blessing.

“The 50-year celebrations of the University meant a great deal to us. We revisited old haunts, reflected on the wonderful life we had here and acknowledged the important part that the University played in our lives and careers. We were also reacquainted with friends and staff, some of whom we had not seen for 35 years!”

Head of Alumni and Development, Ellenore Hobkirk said, “We were delighted to welcome George and Sunita Thomson back to campus for the alumni weekend, and we were thrilled that they renewed their vows with us. It goes to show that the University holds a special place in their heart.

“It was lovely to see Sunita and George renew their vows of commitment and love in the same spot they were married in decades before. Since 1975, we have had over 400 marriages on campus and look forward to many more.”
