An alumnus of the University of Dundee has set up a bursary to help current students who are following in his footsteps.
David Peattie graduated in 1976 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Economics. He is now the Chief Executive of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and has spent his career tackling complex commercial and engineering challenges throughout the world.
He has chosen to give back to a student who is studying Mechanical Engineering and wants to ensure that money is not a barrier to accessing the opportunities a university education offers. Recipients will receive £1,000 per year for all four years of their undergraduate study.
The first recipient is 18-year-old Cameron Majcherek from Arbroath, who said, “This is an amazing opportunity and I am extremely grateful to be the first person to receive the David Peattie Bursary.
“I drive to Dundee every day for classes and this puts a massive strain on my finances. My parents have also recently decided to move to Glasgow which means I now have to look at accommodation options for next semester. This funding boost will help alleviate this pressure.”
The bursary will be given to a first-year student each year and it is hoped by the 2020/21 academic year there will be four students benefiting from the scheme.
David said, “As I enjoyed my time at Dundee I thought it was important to give back.
“Students have it much harder these days and many of them have difficulty finding enough money to support themselves throughout the academic year.
“This is why I decided to set up the bursary to give some much needed support to help those who need it the most.”
