Accolades and awards for Degree Show exhibitors

Eighteen students who exhibited at this year’s University of Dundee Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show have been selected for Scotland’s most prestigious showcases of emerging talent while another is in the running for a £20,000 prize.

The hugely successful 2017 Degree Show attracted around 16,000 visitors over the course of its 10-day run last month. The exhibition received glowing reviews from art critics and led to many graduands receiving offers of jobs, residencies and internships as well as winning awards for their work.

Fifteen artists from the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design will take part in the Royal Scottish Academy New Contemporaries exhibition in Edinburgh next year. They are: Elise Bell, Lucy Buchanan, Cassia Dodman, Monica Dritschel, Rhona Jack, Emma McCarthy, James Alexander McKenzie, Kirsten Millar, Ross Miller, Filippa Pirrip, Sylvia Tarvet, Glen Thomson, Calum Wallis, Gayle Watson and Doaa Yule. Graduand architects Jamie Wyllie, Ashleigh Muirhead and Slaveya Moneva will also exhibit at RSA New Contemporaries.

In addition, Nicole Gault has been selected as one of ten graduating UK artists to exhibit in Newcastle’s Baltic Art Centre after being shortlisted for The Woon Foundation Painting and Sculpture Art Prize. Nicole and the other shortlisted artists will compete for the coveted first prize of £20,000 and a year-long studio, mentoring and exhibition fellowship.

Professor Paul Harris, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone, said, “This year’s Degree Show was an exceptional one and our students are being rightly lauded for the exceptional work they produced. It has wowed not only visitors but also critics, gallery owners and award panels. Being selected as among the best of your national peer group is a huge honour and I am sure the students chosen for New Contemporaries will do us proud, as will Nicole at the Baltic.”

Helen O’Connor, Head of Architecture & Planning at the University, said, “Jamie, Ashleigh and Slaveya are very skilled young architects who displayed not only great technical skill but also great creativity and innovation in their work. Some of the country’s best architects learn their profession at the University of Dundee and I am sure they will stand out at New Contemporaries also.”

RSA New Contemporaries, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year, is regarded as the most prestigious showcase for young artists and architects in Scotland. The selection will be made at the 2017 Degree Shows of the main colleges of art and schools of architecture in Scotland.

With more than £40,000 worth of monetary prizes up for grabs in addition to residency, studio and purchase prizes, the exhibition is an important initiative for Scotland’s emerging artists and architects. Presenting work across a wide range of media, RSA New Contemporaries offers a unique opportunity to see the best of Scotland’s emerging talent under one roof.
