Video art examines identity and self-determination

The work of 12 women artists and collectives that have addressed questions of identity and self-determination will be screened at the University of Dundee’s Centrespace gallery this week.

‘Self/Portraits: Relating Narratives’ takes place at 5.30pm on Friday, 9th December and has been curated by Laura Leuzzi, Giulia Casalini and Diana Georgiou as part of the European Women’s Video Art research project at the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.

The screening weaves together the visual narratives of female artists whose work confronts social and political norms. Employing real and interpreted voices, lyrics and unorthodox visual techniques, their works address female sexuality, motherhood, ecology and violence.

Event co-curator Laura Leuzzi said, “This screening employs varied methodological tools, including dialogue, autobiography, cross-genre and fragmented narratives. This curatorial approach is inspired by two Italian feminist authors who located everyday narratives and exchanges at the heart of their philosophical and political strategies.”

The videos that will be shown are: Pilar Albarracin, Furor Latino (2003), Cinzia Cremona, The Other Person (2010), Catherine Elwes, There is a Myth (1984), Francesca Fini, Cry Me (2009), Antonie Frank Grahamsdaughter (1986), Sigalit Landau, Barbed Hula (2000), Tamara Krikorian, Vanitas (1977), Muda Mathis & Pipilotti Rist, Japsen (1988), Lydia Schouten, Romeo is bleeding (1982),  Elaine Shemilt, Women Soldiers (1984), Annegret Soltau, Schwanger-sein II: phase three (1978/80).

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with artists Cinzia Cremona, Lydia Schouten, Elaine Shemilt, and Laura Leuzzi.

Centrespace Gallery is part of Duncan of Jordanstone’s Visual Research Centre, which is located on the lower levels of Dundee Contemporary Arts. ‘Self/Portraits: Relating Narratives’ takes place there from 5.30-8.30pm on Friday, 9th December.

The screening is part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded research project ‘European Women’s Video Art in the 70s and 80s’. For more information please visit www.ewva.ac.uk.
