Some of the world’s top diabetes researchers will gather at the University of Dundee on Friday to pay tribute to Professor Steve Greene.
Professor Greene, himself an internationally renowned figure in the field, is retiring after a stellar academic and clinical career which saw him significantly further the medical profession’s knowledge of juvenile diabetes.
‘Discovering Diabetes in Dundee’ is a conference organised to celebrate Professor Greene’s achievements on the occasion of his retirement. It takes place from 12pm-5pm on Friday, 22nd January at the Gannochy Trust Lecture Theatre, Ninewells Hospital.
As well as esteemed colleagues from the University and NHS Tayside, researchers and clinicians from across the UK will travel to Dundee for the event. Participants will each discuss an aspect of diabetes care and research, while several of the presentations will highlight the role Dundee is playing in the fight against the dramatic rise of diabetes cases across the globe.
Professor Greene said, “I am delighted and honoured that such a prestigious cast have agreed to take part in this event. In terms of the study of diabetes in young people, these are some of the biggest names working today, researchers who have made an enormous contribution to the subject.
“The fact they were all willing to come here is a reflection on the position of Dundee as a leading centre for diabetes research, something that myself and my colleagues have worked hard to establish over the years. ‘Discovering Diabetes in Dundee’ is an appropriate title for this symposium as the work that goes on here really is world-leading.”
Professor Greene qualified from University College Hospital Medical School, London and then specialised in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at hospitals including at Great Ormond Street, The Kinderspital in Zurich and Guy’s Hospital.
In 1987, Professor Greene was appointed as Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist for Tayside and has worked at the University’s School of Medicine since 1998. He has been Professor of Child & Adolescent Health since 2010 and also held the position of Paediatric Endocrinologist & Diabetologist with NHS Tayside.
Professor Greene has taught both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and published extensively on many aspects of adolescent diabetes. In 2006 he was elected as the International Fellow for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and President of the International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) in 2011. Professor Greene has travelled the world advising and supporting organisations to manage diabetes in children and adolescents.
