The Importance of Lawyers in a Democratic Society

Why lawyers matter will be the focus of this year’s Jean Clark Memorial Lecture at the University of Dundee.

This year’s speaker, Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland, Sir Declan Morgan, will be discussing the importance of the legal system and what challenges lawyers face on Thursday, 10^th November at the Dalhousie Building.

‘The Importance of Lawyers in a Democratic Society’ will delve into Sir Declan’s career. He will be giving his insights into how lawyers can uphold democratic values in an ever changing society.

Professor of Public Law, Alan Page, said, “We are delighted to be hosting this prestigious lecture and look forward to welcoming the Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland to Dundee.

“The legal system is extremely topical at the moment so we are all intrigued to hear what Sir Declan Morgan has to say.”

The Jean Clark Memorial Lecture is held each year at a different location in memory of Jean Clark, a solicitor and the last surviving member of the Clark Family who traded as The Saxone Shoe Company. She established and funded her own charity – The Clark Foundation for Legal Education. The Foundation makes grants annually for undergraduates, graduates and lawyers to further their legal education. The grants are awarded purely on the merit of the application or the hardship of the applicant
