Textile Student Leads Dundee’s Fashion Revolution

A University of Dundee student is calling on the people of Dundee to join the Fashion Revolution.

Lucy Caster, a second year Textile Design student, was inspired by the film ‘True Cost’, a provocative documentary examining how the price of clothing has been constantly decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have been rising.

The film led her to contact organisers of the global Fashion Revolution. She is now one of over 60 Fashion Revolution Ambassadors worldwide, with Lucy representing Dundee.

Lucy said, “The film really makes you think about fast fashion and it has really made an impact on me.

“Although there are great ways to recycle and upcycle your clothes, people haven’t really got that mind-set yet. Fashion Revolution aims to do just that. We hope that our message lasts and that people continue to spread the word.”

Fashion Revolution Dundee will launch at 10am on Wednesday April 26th at Dundee University Student’s Association. Lucy and her followers will be manning a stall and getting students to take a selfie, showing the label of their clothes, using the hashtag #whomademyclothes.

The Fashion Revolution movement was borne out of the response to the 2013 Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh, which tragically killed over a 1000 factory workers. A group of committed citizens joined together aiming to ensure that such a disaster could never happen again.

Fashion Revolution believes that by bringing people together from throughout the fashion industry to challenge how fashion is made, that long-term, industry-wide change can be achieved.

Lucy added: “Being aware of the human and environmental impact that the textile industry is so important to me. If I am to work in this industry. I feel like I can’t ignore this”.
