`SCULPTURAL’ – new exhibition

A visually stunning new exhibition at the University of Dundee features highlights from our extensive sculpture collections, including many pieces by former students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD).

`Sculptural’ includes free-standing and wall-based constructions as well as preparatory drawings, sketch-books and photographic documentation of sculptures that no longer exist.

Among the former students of DJCAD (part of the University) included in the exhibition is David Mach, now famous internationally for his large-scale sculptures like the `Big Heids’ on the M8.

Curator Matthew Jarron said, “The sculptures Mach created while studying in Dundee in the late 1970s no longer survive, but we have numerous drawings, collages and photographs relating to them, including the impressive ‘Carpet of Leaves’ he created at Camperdown Park.”

The exhibition also includes works by some of Scotland’s most acclaimed professional sculptors, including Sir John Steell, known for his statue of Robert Burns outside the McManus in Dundee, and Fred Bushe, founder of the Scottish Sculpture Workshop.

This is the first exhibition staged in the University’s Lamb Gallery since the installation of new lights last month. Matthew said, “Thanks to a grant from Museums Galleries Scotland we’ve been able to upgrade the lighting system, so the sculptures really stand out and look fantastic in the space.”

‘Sculptural’ can be seen in the Lamb Gallery in the University’s Tower Building until May 7th. It is open Mon-Fri 09.30-19.00 Sat 13.00-17.00.
