Scots sporting heroes in Christmas conversation

Elite-level Scottish athletes and feats of human endurance will be under discussion when record-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont and Dr Niall Elliott, Team GB’s Chief Medical Officer for Rio 2016 will share a stage to present Dundee’s annual Christmas Lecture.

Mark Beaumont, Rector of the University, and Dr Elliott, Head of Sports Medicine at the sportscotland Institute of Sport and recent honorary graduate of the institution will share insights into what it means to be a sports medic at elite sporting competitions and an ultra-endurance athlete at the top of their careers.

Dr Elliott said, “I am excited to come back to the University and discuss the state of play for international athletes with Mark on stage.

“Sports Medicine has progressed immensely over the last few years and what it takes to prepare and support Britain's athletes to compete at the top of their sporting careers is similar to the intensity of Mark’s own adventures.”

The conversation, which takes place on Saturday, 10th of December at 6pm, will be followed by a civic reception with mince pies and mulled cider. The audience will be given the opportunity to hear about the inspiration that can be drawn from athletes and adventurers alike and what it means to be an active nation.

The annual Christmas lecture, a joint venture with Dundee City Council, inaugurated in 2007 to commemorate the University's 40th anniversary and its close relationship with the city of Dundee and its people, will take place on Saturday, 10th December at 6pm in the Dalhousie Building at the University of Dundee. This year’s lecture will also launch the University of Dundee's 50th anniversary celebrations.
