`Mathematics – the framework of life’

A common perception is that mathematics has no relevance to “the real world”. Yet, as a University of Dundee Professor will make clear in a public lecture this week, we interact with mathematics throughout our daily lives and mathematical tools are being used to address some of the most fundamental challenges facing mankind today.

Professor Fordyce Davidson, Acting Dean of Science and Engineering at Dundee, will deliver his talk, `Mathematics – the framework of life’, for the British Association of Science this week.

“Many people struggle to engage with mathematics, because the relevance of the subject to our everyday is often hidden,” said Professor Davidson.

“But everything ranging from international finance, through pioneering medical research to everyday devices like smartphones and computers, relies on the powerful tools of mathematics. It is  at the very heart of so much of what we do in our modern technology-driven society.

“My talk will highlight how mathematics plays  a central part in understanding the very framework of life.”

Professor Davidson’s talk, organised by the Tayside and Fife branch of the British Science Association, takes place at 7pm on Thursday January 28^th at the University of Abertay’s Kydd Building, Bell Street, Dundee.

 The lecture is supported by The Edina Trust and is part of the BSA Tayside and Fife branch’s 2015-16 programme of public events.
