Goldsmiths bursary for Beth

University of Dundee student Beth Henderson has seen her intricate silversmithing skills recognised at the Goldsmith’s Precious Metal Bursary Awards 2016.

Twenty-one-year-old Beth, originally from Caithness, has won a Goldsmiths Precious Metal Bursary Award of £1000 to enable her to buy materials for her work. The final-year Jewellery & Metal Design student was one of several winners in the national competition and impressed the judges by taking a contemporary twist to traditional silversmithing design, combing multiple construction methods to depict a beautiful silver vessel representing the wind.

Bursaries of up to £1,000 are awarded each academic year to students from colleges and universities across the UK whose designs exhibit exciting and innovative use of precious metals. Winners are publicised at the prestigious New Designers exhibition in London and their finished pieces may be showcased afterwards at the Goldsmiths' Centre as part of a high profile industry event.

Beth, who had previously won a commission to design a commemorative silver vessel for V&A Museum of Design, Dundee architect Kengo Kuma to mark the building’s ground-breaking ceremony, said, "It is an honour to be recognised again for my work. These little nods tell you that your passion is well placed.

"Hopefully this award will help to raise the profile of emerging design talent within Dundee. It is a tremendous privilege to win this award and I am looking forward to using it to further develop my skills with precious metals and creating a signature element for my honours project."

The competition prizes allow winners of the bursary to buy use silver, gold, palladium or platinum to make their final piece. Entrants to the competition were required to submit a design proposal and supporting material for their final project. Their work demonstrates design development, quality and consideration of design, professionalism of presentation and individual creativity.

In addition to the bursary to buy precious metal, upon completion, Beth will receive a personalised Award Certificate and an Award Winners display card for her Degree Show later this year.
