Exhibitions and awards for Degree Show stars

Almost 150 Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design graduates, who wowed visitors to last month’s Degree Show, are set to receive nationwide exposure after being selected for prestigious exhibitions.

Sixty-seven graduating students from the Product Design, Jewellery & Metal Design, Digital Interaction Design, and Textile Design courses at Duncan of Jordanstone, part of the University of Dundee, will be exhibiting at the New Designers exhibition, which takes place in London over two tranches from 29th June to 2nd July.

Another 22 graphic design and illustration graduates will be exhibiting at D&AD New Blood Festival on 6th and 7th July while 18 from the Interior Environmental Design course will take part in Free Range from 14th-18th July. Every year, these exhibitions bring the design industry together and showcases the work of design graduates to an audience running into the tens of thousands.

Dundee graduates will also feature heavily in exhibitions of upcoming artists held by the Royal Scottish Academy, Scottish Society of Artists and Visual Arts Scotland over the next year. More than 20 artists and architects from the University have been selected for the RSA New Contemporaries, which takes place at the Royal Scottish Academy in March, the VAS exhibition in December and the SSA show in December.

Some of the most influential figures in the worlds of art and design will attend these shows and Dundee graduates will compete with peers from across the UK for the awards and early-career opportunities that the exhibitions offer.

Professor Paul Harris, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, congratulated the students on their success, saying, “I am sure this is just the start of dozens of wonderful careers at the cutting edge of art and design for our hugely talented graduates. They are our best ambassadors as they show the breadth of talent produced here as they go on to establish themselves in their chosen fields.

“Anyone who visited this year’s Degree Show had the privilege of viewing work from some of the UK’s top young artists and designers. Those who have been selected for these prestigious shows have shown exceptional dedication and determination to make the most of their innate talent and fully deserve the recognition they are receiving.

“I have no doubt that they will impress the audiences in London and Edinburgh and many will obtain jobs, residencies and further exhibition offers as well as winning awards. This really was a vintage year for Duncan of Jordantone and we will be hearing about the success of this crop of students for many years to come.”

The 2016 Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show took place at the University and attracted almost 15,000 visitors keen to see work from around 300 final-year students. The students will receive their degrees at the University’s annual Summer Graduation ceremonies on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.
