Emerging talent to the fore at Degree Show 2016

The University of Dundee will once more be transformed into Scotland’s largest exhibition space next week when some of the UK’s brightest emerging creative talents showcase the fruits of their undergraduate labours.

The Art, Design and Architecture Degree Show 2016 opens on Friday, May 20th. Over the show’s 10-day run, thousands of visitors will cast their eye over work from around 300 students from the University’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and the School of Social Sciences. The 2016 Degree Show takes place throughout the two buildings and fourteen floors that comprise Duncan of Jordanstone College, with every spare space exhibiting art and design.

Duncan of Jordanstone is one of the leading art and design schools in the UK and many of its students go on to be world-renowned artists, animators, designers and makers.

This year’s cohort will be hoping to emulate the success of the likes of Turner Prize winner Susan Philipsz, illustrator Jo Basford, photographer Albert Watson, fashion designer Hayley Scanlan, film director David Mackenzie, video games pioneer Aaron Garbut, Star Wars animator Matt Cameron, and the late painter Alberto Morrocco, who are all Duncan of Jordanstone alumni.

Professor Jeanette Paul, Acting Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, said, “At the start of another Degree Show season, I look forward to being amazed and inspired once again by the breathtaking work and products our students have created.

“The buzz has been building for months and the anticipation is palpable. It is hard to describe how exciting and vibrant a time this is for everyone involved, not least the students who have poured their heart and soul into their work over several years.

“Graduates of the University may become practising artists or they may go on to work in film, games and animation studios. They might find themselves working with some of the world’s largest tech companies or leading the next big start-ups.

“As well as arts organisations and design studios, they work in environmental sustainability, medical professions, crime enforcement, education, disaster victim identification, deep sea exploration, and countless other areas where their creativity is highly valued.

“This is a chance for visitors to immerse themselves in work by some of the UK’s most talented emerging architects, artists and designers, hugely creative individuals who have the potential to change the way we live by tackling some of the biggest problems facing the world.”

The Degree Show is one of the highlights of the city’s cultural calendar, with a record-breaking 15,000 visitors attending last year’s exhibition and generating in excess of £1.5million for the local economy in the process.

Degree Show includes exhibits from students in all 11 undergraduate programmes at Duncan of Jordanstone College and from graduates in Architecture.

The traditional Preview Evening for the students, their families and guests takes place on Friday, 20th May. The Degree Show then opens to the public the next day and remains open until Sunday, 29th May.

Admission is free and the exhibition is open from 10am until 8pm (Monday – Friday) and 10am to 4pm (Saturday – Sunday).

Degree Show forms part of the Ignite Dundee festival, which showcases the amazing range of culture and creativity the city has to offer, including degree shows, exhibitions, talks, workshops and open studios.
