Dundee rises in table of world’s top universities

The University of Dundee has risen five places to 180th in this year’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings and has been named as one of the world’s top young universities in another prestigious survey.
The latest edition of the THE rankings puts the University at 28th place among UK institutions as it strengthens its grip on a place within the elite top 200. The league table uses 13 measures of performance, grouped into five pillars - teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income – to rank universities across the globe. Dundee’s high rating is the result of relentless improvement in almost all metrics.
Particularly strong performances were recorded in international outlook, in part due to the percentage of international students attending Dundee, and citations, where the University’s impact is in the top 10 per cent worldwide.
The University also came 15th (up from 21st last year) in the QS Top 50 Under 50 and was the top-ranked UK institution. Celebrating the world's top universities under 50 years old, the poll is based on the latest QS World University Rankings and comes shortly after Dundee was named top UK university in THE’s equivalent ranking.
Dundee is the reigning Scottish University of the Year (Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide) and, in other recent successes, was named in the top 10 of the UK’s National Student Survey, placing it ahead of Cambridge and Oxford, and one of the top UK universities for graduate employment in the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey.
Professor Sir Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee, said, “We are absolutely delighted not only to be named once again as one of the world’s top 200 universities, recognition that institutions across the globe covet, but to continue to climb in the rankings of globally successful universities.
“When we were named within the top 200 last year I said that we were determined to build on this success so it is very pleasing to see that our progress continues thanks to the hard work of the whole University community. Our aim as a university is to transform lives, locally and globally, through our top-class research, innovative teaching and a student experience that is being increasingly recognised as the best in Scotland.
“While we have a long-term goal to become Scotland’s leading university in all the fields in which we choose to work, our ambitions do not end at the country’s borders. We operate on a worldwide stage and this ranking, along with our other hugely positive recent results, will help further bolster our reputation internationally.”
Times Higher Education say their World University Rankings, now in their 13th year, are the world’s most comprehensive and carefully calibrated global rankings. This year they ranked 980 institutions, drawing on 150 separate data points on each of 1,313 of the world’s leading research universities.
