Celebrating ‘Art in Relief’

Relief prints from the University of Dundee’s extensive collections, including works by notable masters Alison McKenzie and Willie Rodger as well as former students of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, have gone on display at the University’s Tower Foyer Gallery.

The new exhibition, ‘Art in Relief’ will showcase dozens of prints for public viewing in a precursor to both the Print Design Festival 2016 and the Ignite Festival. Members of the public can view outstanding examples of woodcut and linocut, the two most common types of relief printing.

Curator Matthew Jarron explained, “Woodcut and linocut prints each give a very distinctive and bold graphic appearance, allowing for some truly striking imagery. Our exhibition features some of the best relief prints from the University’s permanent collection and we are thrilled to kick off a summer of celebration dedicated to art with this traditional form of printmaking.

“In contrast to etching and other intaglio processes where the recessed areas hold the ink, the visual beauty of relief printing is in the inked and printed raised areas of the print surface.”

The free exhibition is now open to the public and can be seen in the Tower Foyer Gallery, University of Dundee, from 9.30am-7pm (weekdays) and 1-5pm (Saturdays) until the 25th June.
