Ninewells 1974-2014

Teaching & Research

One of the key principles behind the design of Ninewells Hospital was the ‘embedding’ of the Medical School within the Hospital. Thanks to the University, Ninewells has been home to some influential and world-leading teaching and research over the years, and the School of Medicine is now recognised as a world leader.

Curriculum developments pioneered here have been adopted by many other medical schools, most notably the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) . This was developed in the 1970s as a reliable objective method of measuring clinical skills. Students are presented with a number of situations and have a fixed amount of time to deal with each one. The system is now used in 40 countries worldwide (courtesy of the Centre for Medical Education).

Dundee is also making great advances in the detection and treatment of kidney, bladder and prostate cancers (courtesy of School of Medicine).
