Teaching & Research
One of the key principles behind the design of Ninewells Hospital was the ‘embedding’ of the Medical School within the Hospital. Thanks to the University, Ninewells has been home to some influential and world-leading teaching and research over the years, and the School of Medicine is now recognised as a world leader.

Image above: Dundee has led the way in medical education. Curriculum developments pioneered here have been adopted by many other medical schools, most notably the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) . This was developed in the 1970s as a reliable objective method of measuring clinical skills. Students are presented with a number of situations and have a fixed amount of time to deal with each one. Image above: In the field of cancer research, Dundee has made significant developments since the 1990s with Sir David Lane’s work on the p53 gene and Professor Bob Steele’s leadership of the national bowel cancer screening programme, which has reduced the number of deaths from the UK’s third most common cancer. Dundee is also making great advances in the detection and treatment of kidney, bladder and prostate cancers (courtesy of School of Medicine).
