Tayside Medical History Museum Art Collection - Benefactors

The portraits shown here were all displayed at Dundee Royal Infirmary and depict notable benefactors to DRI and other hospitals in Dundee. When DRI closed in 1998, the portraits were transferred to the Tayside Medical History Museum and most are now on display at Ninewells Hospital.

James Pullar Esq, 1804

James Pullar was a Dundee baker who in his will bequeathed a significant part of his wealth to Dundee Royal Infirmary, as well as to “the Kirk Session, the Nine Trades and for the education of ten poor boys of the name of Pullar”. This portrait and the one of his wife Elisabeth (below) are by an unknown artist, but were exhibited at the Old Dundee exhibition of 1892-3 under the name ‘J McD’.

Rt Hon William, Lord Panmure, 1838

Thomas Musgrave Joy (1812-1866)

William Maule, 1st Baron Panmure (1771-1852) was President of the Dundee Royal Infirmary Board of Directors. He was born William Ramsay and took the name Maule on succeeding to the Panmure estates. Between 1838 and 1852 he donated £2820 to Dundee Royal Infirmary. This portrait (donated by Lord Panmure) was hung in the Town Hall and then the DRI Board Room.

William Young, 1840

Peter Cleland (1830s-1880)

William Young (1796-1869) was a local painter and a benefactor of Dundee Royal Infirmary. This portrait and the one of his wife (below) were exhibited at the Old Dundee exhibition of 1892-3, at which time they were still owned by the Young family. They were painted by Peter Cleland, an Aberdeen artist known for his still lifes.

James Soutar Esq of Thornbank, 1849

In 1855 Dundee's Infirmary (originally founded in 1798) re-opened in new premises on Barrack Road. Over £10,000 of the £14,500 cost was bequeathed by James Soutar (1762-1841) and his sister Elizabeth (1773-1848, see below).

Sir John Ogilvy, 9th Baronet of Inverquharity, 1885

Copy by R Peyton Reid (1859-1945) after an original painting by Sir George Reid (1841-1913)

Ogilvy (1803-90) was a Life Director of Dundee Lunatic Asylum and President of the Board of Directors at Dundee Royal Infirmary. He was MP for Dundee 1857-73.

Mrs George Gilroy, 1892

Archibald David Reid (1844-1908)

Mrs Gilroy (1825-1909) was the wife of George Gilroy of Castleroy in Broughty Ferry. The family firm of Gilroy Brothers were manufacturers of jute goods and sackcloth, and became ship-owners to further their extensive export and import trade with South America and Calcutta. Mrs Gilroy’s concern for the welfare of nurses led her to provide donations to support the building of a home for nurses in the grounds of Dundee Royal Infirmary. The Gilroy Home opened in 1892 and this portrait was hung inside it. When DRI closed, the Gilroy Home was converted into houses in 1999. The painting is now displayed in the School of Nursing & Midwifery.

Sir William Ogilvy Dalgleish of Errol Park, 1911

Sir Walter William Ouless (1848-1933)

Dalgleish (1832-1913) was appointed a Vice-President of the Board of Governors of Dundee Royal Infirmary in 1889 and served as President from 1890 until his death. Among many generous donations to DRI he provided the £4000 required to build the Dalgleish Nurses Home at DRI, which opened in 1896. In 1902 he donated £10,000 to University College Dundee to fund a new Medical School building. He founded the Ogilvy Dalgleish Gold Medal, awarded annually to "the most deserving nurse". His portrait was commissioned for the city's art collection in 1911. This replica was painted by the artist at the request of the Governors of DRI.

Sir James Key Caird Baronet LLD, 1929

David Foggie (1878-1948)

Dundee Royal Infirmary benefitted greatly from the immense fortune acquired by the Caird family through the Ashton and Craigie Jute Works. The largest of many donations given to the infirmary by Caird (1837-1916) was £24,000 in 1902 for the building and furnishing of the Caird Cancer Hospital, which opened in 1906.

Another version of this painting hangs in Caird Hall.

Mrs Emma Grace Marryat, 1929

David Foggie (1878-1948)

Marryat (1849-1927) was James Caird's sister. She served as a Vice President on the Dundee Royal Infirmary board 1918-27, and donated £25,000 to the hospital in 1923.
