Mat Fleming

Mat Fleming works as an individual artist and in collectives responding to invitations to work within particular communities or to create work based around filmic processes. His work is characterised by a materialist 'craft' approach in which he is manually involved in the production of the images on the filmstrip. He is a Director and founding member of Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle (founded 2006) which has an international reputation for excellence and independence. He is a founding member of the Film Bee (founded 2003), a filmmaking coop that runs a lab. It collectivises film equipment and works on collaborative films. Mr. Fleming’s artworks are usually shown at film festivals and exhibitions as installations, screenings and performed live works.

He has taken part in many residencies. His work has been shown internationally at venues including Rotterdam International Film Festival, Cambridge International Super8 festival, Cinema Nova (Brussels), Embassy Gallery (Edinburgh), BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Cultural Olympiad London, Sheffield DocFest and as part of tours of the USA and China. He also works as a film technician to artists and arts venues, a music video producer, and an educator delivering workshops for artists, community and health-related projects.
