Pathology lecture first for Dundee

The University's prominence in the field of pathology will be highlighted in November when it hosts a lecture to mark the first ever UK National Pathology Week

The Robert Muir lecture in Ninewells Hospital on November 7 also commemorates the first holder of the Chair of Pathology at the University and one of the founding fathers of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, which was formed in 1906.

Robert Muir was also the author of the first comprehensive Pathology text Muir's Textbook of Pathology in 1924.

The latest (14th) edition of Muir's Textbook of Pathology was published this year with Professor David Levison, the current Professor of Pathology in Dundee, as senior editor. Many of the chapters were also written by Dundee-based authors.

The Robert Muir Lecture will be given by Professor Andrew Wyllie, Professor of Pathology in the University of Cambridge, and co-discoverer of Apoptosis, the process where cells organise their own death. Apoptosis is fundamental to normal development and when it goes wrong it can lead to the development of cancer.

Professor Wyllie's talk, "Cell death in living tissues: apoptosis re-examined" is open to all and will be followed by a reception for all attendees.

The lecture, which is sponsored by Dundee Medical School and the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland It takes place in Lecture Theatre 1 at Ninewells Hospital at 4pm on Friday 7 November.
