Success for University oarsmen

The last year has been plain sailing for the University boat club, which has enjoyed the most successful season in its 10-year history.

The men's team claimed victory at the prestigious Clydesdale Head of the River in Glasgow in Mid-March to finish overall third in the Scottish Universities Winter League Table.

The win is the latest in a long list of victories for the oarsmen and they have been particularly pleased with their placing in the league table above larger university teams including Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

The team took the lead over the 5km stretch of the River Clyde, to finish ahead of league table leaders Glasgow and St Andrews. The team has won four of its six races over the last year, in Forfar, Aberdeen, Inverness Glasgow.

Dave Shea, boat club coach/equipment officer said, 'This has been the most successful year in the boat club's 10-year history and it is especially rewarding because Dundee has a relatively small and low-profile club compared with other Scottish universities.

"We have a larger membership this year with some experienced oarsmen and we have recently designed a new kit which has helped to inspire a greater feeling of team spirit within the club. The women's team has also come on in leaps and bounds this year - as a whole the boat club is going from strength to strength."
